This work aims to analyze the paratexts of the editions of the Portuguese Method of teaching reading, by António Feliciano de Castilho, and demonstrate how these elements constitute editorial strategies adopted by the author to dialogue with the audience for which the work is intended. To do so, we resorted to the theoretical and methodological foundations of Gérard Genette (2009) and to volume sixty-one, from the first to fifth editions, of the work Castiliana. We conclude that the author, when choosing the paratexts, sought to maintain relationships with his readers by making ensuring that his text circulated and became present in the daily lives of teachers and students in Portuguese and Brazilian schools in the 19th century.
