FELIX, Rita de Cássia Souza. Ebano ladies in Black Social Clubs: short braids and lipstick. Rev. Comunic [online]. 2014, vol.21, n.1, pp.39-52. ISSN 2238-121X.  https://doi.org/10.15600/2238-121X/comunicacoes.v21n1p39-52.

The article in question refers to the cataloging, cognizance and studies about the Black Social Clubs or African clubs that emerged from the second half of the nineteenth century in various regions of Brazil, wherever there were former slaves and their descendants. Emphasis will be given to the participation of black women in the clubs because of the importance of women in the country’s history. Studies on the Black Social Clubs aim to reconstruct the history of blacks with new objects, new approach and new research problems. The studies and researches show that Black Social Clubs exist both in urban areas and in the interior of the states of Brazil. The research sources are based mainly on oral testimony, coming from the testimonies of those who actively participated in the process and in scientific research published. Photos are considered excellent sources of information beyond the accounting records and minutes of meetings among others. The research studies point to the importance of these organizations not only as another form of cultural survival, but also in response to the racist and discriminating society, as places of leisure and entertainment, socialization, maintenance of traditions and affirmation of identities.

Palavras-chave : Black Social Clubs; Collectivity; Identities; Black Women.
