This article seeks to synthesize the path of struggle, persecution and resistance marking the history of the quilombola communities for the recognition of their fundamental rights, especially in the field of education. Present in almost all Brazilian states, the quilombola communities were persecuted and destroyed before the Abolition, forgotten after it, and only reaching the right of being recognized with the enactment of the 1988 Federal Constitution. Called quilombos, lands of blacks, rural black communities, quilombola communities, quilombola remaining communities, and mocambos, among others, these communities have in common the African descent, kinship ties, ancestral traditions and the maintenance of collective practices. They are still subject to violence, such as the invasion of their lands and the racism still present in the institutions that determines the difficulty of access to goods, services and basic rights. The conquest of the Chules School and the Curriculum Guidelines for the Quilombola School Education represent landmarks.
