GESQUI, Luiz Carlos. The absenteeism of public school teachers: uses and abuses of legal protection. Rev. Comunic [online]. 2014, vol.21, n.2, pp.33-40. ISSN 2238-121X.  https://doi.org/10.15600/2238-121X/comunicacoes.v21n2p33-40.

One of the problems pointed out by school managers, experts in public schools and often highlighted in the media, refers to the high rate of teachers’ absences. However, few studies have sought to ascertain the real number of this “high rate of teacher absenteeism” and what are the reasons for such absences. This article highlights the record of teachers’ absences in the classroom and the justifications they used for them in a public school located in the Greater São Paulo area, where13.448 classes were observed throughout the school year of 2006. For the 2,868 recorded absences (21.4% of total classes planned for the school year) there were nineteen different forms of justifications, some of them legally protected but others not. The results indicate the urgent need for discussion regarding current educational legislation, for it supports situations where the absence from work is fully justified and allows abuses such as the famous homemade arrangements. The text points to the hypothesis of the existence of a culture of absence within the researched school since all teachers who worked during the school year drew on some kind of absence, legally or not.
