COSTA, Célio Juvenal; MENEZES, Sezinando Luis  e  NASCIMENTO, Luciana de Araújo. Education in the Portuguese empire: educational reorganization in the University of Coimbra’s 16th century reform. Rev. Comunic [online]. 2014, vol.21, n.2, pp.129-144. ISSN 2238-121X.  https://doi.org/10.15600/2238-121X/comunicacoes.v21n2p129-144.

This article aims at presenting some reflections on the University of Coimbra’s reform in the context of education in the 16th century Portuguese Empire, during the reign of King John III. In this sense, the proposed analysis of the history of Portuguese education goes beyond the actions performed in the kingdom, and seeks to show how the institution’s reform was in deep harmony with the Crown’s objective of spreading the 16th century Portuguese religious culture into the entire Portuguese empire, including Brazil. With the aid of letters and permits addressed to the Portuguese University, we present the institution’s educational reorganization, which was based on four pillars: education, examinations and degrees, organization of colleges, and teacher hiring. The article seeks to highlight that such reform was the Portuguese monarch’s attempt to modernize the institution.
