This article emphasizes the importance of including citizenship as a fundamental dimension in the Federal Program of Sustainable Schools that currently has three dimensions: management, curriculum and physical spaces. For that, this article presents the report and the analysis of three experiences with environmental educator processes in formal public schools occurred in 2011 and 2012 in Piracicaba/SP, Americana/SP and Suzano/SP. As theoretical reference the citizenship understood within a perspective of building environmental educator processes. It is discussed the consensual way the subject-matter is incorporated by the school and how it is aligned to the context of democratic immaturity of the Brazilian State. It is argued the urgency to establish a democratical, political and planetary citizenship in formal education. The experiences reported point out some common potential: a concern for constructing the training processes in the collective path, respecting the particularities of each territory; the will and effort to involve local community beyond the walls of schools as a whole; and the inclusion of dreams and utopias of the participants. As recurring difficulties, there is the weakening of partnerships throughout the process and the low institutionalization, making the permanency and continuous (re) construction of environmental education processes difficult.
