Abstract

FELIPPE, IRENE MONTEIRO  and  SZYMANSKI, LUCIANA. THE VIRTUE OF SPEECH: THE WORK OF SOCIAL TEACHERS WITH LITERATURE. Rev. Comunic [online]. 2016, vol.23, n.2, pp.187-205. ISSN 2238-121X.  https://doi.org/10.15600/2238-121X/comunicacoes.23n2p187-205.

The purpose of this research was to investigate the use of children’s literature by teachers in a social program. The central question was: “What is the meaning of working with children’s stories for an educator of a CRAS?” The philosophical basis for this study was Martin Heidegger’s concept of Meaning and Technique, developed as part of his existential phenomenology. The research methodology employed was that of the reflective one-to-one interview. The sample size was three. These teachers reported finding their use of children’s literature in the social institution both engaging and emotionally satisfying but they also felt distant and uncertain about it. The stories were understood as fire sparks that transmute the way children and educators are in the world, highlighting the use of literature as an assistant in children’s and teacher’s educational, cultural and personal development. Thus, for example, it was notable the openness of the educators for work and for creating alternative practices against their everyday obstacles, such as, the dearth of teacher training, the lack of professional reference and the perceived depreciating value of teaching as a profession by public administrators and educators. This study highlighted the need for further research into the connections between the use of literature in different institutions of non-formal education.
