Abstract

SANTOS, Rosa Maria Cardoso dos  and  LEMGRUBER, Marcio Silveira. Beans and Dreams: cyberactivist discourses on meritocracy in Public Education in Rio de Janeiro. Rev. Educ. e Cult. Contemp. [online]. 2018, vol.15, n.40, pp.6-23.  Epub July 22, 2018. ISSN 2238-1279.  https://doi.org/10.5935/2238-1279.20180045.

The purpose of this article is establishing a discussion on the speeches of cyberactivist teachers about meritocracy applied to public education in Rio de Janeiro. We investigated, based on the rhetorical analysis proposed by the Theory of Argumentation, the beliefs, values, visions and practices adopted as a basis for the arguments used by this group. In addition, we analyzed the limits and possibilities of the discursive appeal of this digital rhetoric, for social and political mobilization of the teachers. Results suggest that discourses of the groups orators are based mainly on dissociation of concepts for the term public school. This supports the adoption of discourses that have the function of exalting or decrying values and hierarchies of values, as well as generating communion among members of the audience. The locus of the argumentative encounter was used, in most cases, to convey critical slogans, with little development of perspectives.

Keywords : Cyberactivism; Public Education; Rhetoric; Argumentation.
