Abstract

This article aims at deepening the knowledge on the subject of representation of AfricanAmericans in children's literature and emphasizing the importance of studying literature and addressing the African-American ethnic diversity as a contribution to the Brazilian culture. The research corpus is composed of five childrenbooksincluded in the Plano Nacional de Alfabetização na Idade Certa (PNAIC) [National Program for Literacy at Age One] distributed to elementary public schools. Based on authors such as Stuart Hall, Lilia Moritz Schwarcz, Nilma Lino Gomes, and Kabengele Munanga, who deal with ethnic and racial issues, the books selected were analyzed. The results show the importance of literature in the construction of the African American identity and in the cultural appreciation of these people, besides the formative and educational character of children literature for the exercise of citizenship and respect to diversity. However, it was also observed that the works do not directly problematize power relations and racial inequalities: issues such as prejudice and racism, for example, are not explicitly addressed. The discussion against racism must take place among students in the classroom, having literature as a source of information and reflection on current social practices and ethno-racial relations. African-American culture must be seen, not as a curiosity or an exotic item, but as a constitutive element of the Brazilian culture and society.
