Abstract

COSTA, Regis Argüelles da. Public school excellency at Teresópolis RJ: a case study. Rev. Educ. e Cult. Contemp. [online]. 2018, vol.15, n.40, pp.343-362.  Epub July 23, 2018. ISSN 2238-1279.  https://doi.org/10.5935/2238-1279.20180060.

Consolidated data from the Índice de Desempenho da Educação Básica (IDEB) and Prova Brazil indicates a significant drop on the results of the public primary school system in the final years of elementary school, when it compared to the initial years. Thus, we sought to identify a school at this level of education that, by contrast, presented good relative performance in the federal evaluation indexes, and in the opinion of the professionals who work at the area. Those criterions led us to the Chad Goblin School, located in the urban area of the municipality of Teresópolis - RJ, near of Rio de Janeiro town. The research work sought to analyze some characteristics of this establishment in order to understand factors that may interfere in its reputation and its results. It intended to be an approximation with studies that seek to refine what would be the mediations that mark some successful processes of formal education, whose study would lead to the construction of a sociology of schooling, according to Maria Nogueira. The use of several techniques of analysis - quantitative and qualitative - extended the possibilities of approaching the object, going along with the literature that emphasizes the epistemic multidimensionality of the school. It was possible to perceive the existence of a certain institutional ethos that, in a certain way, engenders the representation of a school of excellence for the school community in general.
