Abstract This work presents a discussion about the process of teachers’ professionalization which occurred in Mato Grosso through the interpretation of the changes inserted by the activities of the Training Centre of Teaching in Cuiabá in the professional identity of the teachers at elementary teaching in Mato Grosso by the 1960’s. Based on papers analysis and depositions of teachers in the period of study, the suggested interpretation takes the activity of this institution as part of the process of elementary teachers’ professionalization in Mato Grosso that happened by 1960’s, which involved the introduction of meaning changes in the hierarchy relationship and in the motivation procedure in that age.
