We observed social representations of citizenship focusing on its role in education. The participants were 321 people linked to one public university. We asked what it is citizenship like, political/party preference, type of link with the university and place of dwelling. Three sets of themes emerged: subject-citizen, action-of-the- citizen, and goal-oriented-citizen’s action. The subject-citizen was less represented as a civil and organized entity (trade union/social movement), party institution or individual. The more frequently mentioned actions-of-the-citizen were to participate, to fulfill duties/to control, interaction between individual and society. The more observed themes about goal-oriented-citizen’s-action were rights and duties, right to an egalitarian society, freedom/ social recognition, right to education, right to health. The results were discussed drawing upon a socio- historical perspective.
