This text problematizes the interpretations instituted on the leadership of São Paulo State in the Brazilians education renovation in the period of the first Republic (1889 - 1930). The analysis positions the problem within the dialogue between memory and history. The first part of the text examines the way in which the Paulista educators formed up an interpretation on the excellence of the state school apparatus. The second part deals with the spreading of this reference model taking into account the representations of this model which had circulated in the country and the multiple trajectories which involved the performance of the Paulista teachers in other places in the country.
