This study seeks to understand the subfield - in the Bourdieusian meaning - of the secondary education in the State of Santa Catarina, from the beginning of re-democratization of Brazilian society (1945) to the approval of LDBEN in 1961. During this historical period, the subfield of secondary education in Santa Catarina was marked by new growth of Catholic schools and by the establishment of public network of gymnasiums and schools. The main objective in this study is to focus on the shortage of free public secondary education, which contributed for the exclusion of a significant part of children and teenagers from the formal education system.
