This article seeks to understand how the teaching of Geography could contribute to the political consolidation of the Brazilian nation in the nineteenth century. Through opinions on education (1882 and 1883)of Rui Barbosa (1849-1923). From the category of mediation and the historical method, it was like Geography was taught in schools, and how it could have been a strong ally for the implementation of development projects in the nation. However, the changes proposed by Rui Barbosa did not leave the paper and much of what he proposed only began to take hold later in the Republic, with works of other intellectuals.
