This article aims to investigate theoretical and methodological perspectives in professional development of science and Biology teachers using academic production as the main source. The academic production published from 1999 to 2009 in Brazilian Science Education journals were analysed in order to identify the theoretical and methodological approaches in these studies. The results reveal heterogeneous understanding of professional development, mostly in terms of sporadic actions, targeting to update science knowledge. Finally, although some articles refer to the Epistemology of Practice, the study identified distinct and conflicting understandings of this theoretical approach.
