Abstract Between 1992 and 1993, an in-service course in Integrated Public Education Centers in State of Rio de Janeiro was developed for elementary school teachers work in full-time schools. The course, which had a pedagogical residence design, involved 6,426 teachers in 54 municipalities. This article involved 41 student-teachers from São Gonçalo in eight schools. The analysis, based on the theory of social representations, indicated the prevalence of sentiments to practice teaching and to opt for it. The social representations about the course of the CIEPs revealed the sense of innovation and challenge, but also criticism.
