Abstract This paper presents the first results of research carried out under my doctoral project which considers the profound changes occurring in Portuguese society, particularly after the Revolution in 1974, have produced changes in conceptions about daycare and its functions, in particular by allowing questioning the role of women in family and society and evaluate alternatives to maternal care and questioning the role of State and society in recognition of the right to education of young children, the right of women to equal opportunities and family sharing of responsibilities in the education of children.
