Abstract

This article presents the history of environmental education in public environmental management, considering the period between the creation of Secretaria Especial do Meio Ambiente, 1973 and the creation of Instituto Chico Mendes para a Conservação da Biodiversidade, 2007. The objective was to demonstrate the ideological and political aspects in dispute during the process of federal institutionalization of the focused field. Thus, we considered the analysis of federal official documents and narratives of the protagonist subjects for the mentioned period. In the end, it was concluded that a structure of environmental education, in the process of environmental management was effective, providing relevant contributions for environmental and justice struggle in Brazil.
