This article discusses the changes in the identity of primary teachers in Mato Grosso, in the years 1963 and 1971. Consultation to official documentation, conference proceedings, legislation, journals, testimonies of teachers in the 1960s and some bibliography produced by authors from Mato Grosso in that period has outlined the new borders of teacher identity. They are interpreted as part of the process which established a professional field in which the practice of teaching in primary education became to be oriented by specific knowledge and practices legitimized. These knowledge and practices were considered the qualified training to teaching as parameter for review of rights and wages.
