This article analyses the process of training and professionalization of teaching activity in Brazil and Portugal in late 19th century by assessing educational publications from both countries. In Brazil, the selected material was the journal entitled O Ensino Primário: Revista mensal consagrada aos interesses do ensino e redigida por professores primários equivalent to ‘Primary Instruction: a monthly journal written by and directed towards the interests of primary teachers published between 1884 and 1885. From Portugal, the selected publication was O Ensino: Revista d’Instrucção Primaria Teaching: The Primary Instruction Journal, published between 1885 and 1890, whose editor Theophilo Ferreira, was acknowledged not only for his performance as a primary teacher and principal of the Teacher Preparation School of Lisbon but also as a politician whose actions aimed to defend the interests of the laborers of progress - as he labeled primary teachers.
