In this paper we discuss the history of São José school, a confessional institution directed for boys education, sons of privileged families from region of Pontal of Minas Gerais, between 1940 and 1970. The creation of this school was in the context of multiplication of religious missions throughout the world, and the presence of the Congregation of Sagrados Estigmas de Nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo at Brazil. Besides the bibliographical study, we consulted newspapers, minutes, oral and iconographic sources, which enabled us to understand aspects of education policy, the school culture and pedagogical practices that support this educational process.
