Abstract

The article seeks to assess the degree to which the right to education has been implemented in the state of Pernambuco by comparing it to the state of São Paulo and Brazil as a whole. For this purpose, it also refers to the norms contained in the successive Brazilian constitutions and the educational information available in the demographic censuses. Distinguishing three periods (from the constitution of 1824 to the census of 1890; from the latter to the census of 1950 and from the latter to the census of 2010), the assessment shows the educational inequality between Pernambuco and São Paulo that has become established since the end of the 19th century.
