This article presents reflections of a survey on the theoretical and methodological foundations that guided the teaching of reading in Brazil, in the period 1500-2011. Methodological, appears as a literature review and, theoretical, was grounded in the framework of authors who have discussing said topic. The analysis identified methods and models of teaching reading that were created throughout the history of the development of education, how these approaches understand the language and its ownership and the type of player that aimed to form.
