Abstract

SILVA, Regina  and  JABER-SILVA, Michelle. Social Mapping and Environmental Education, dialogues from participatory mapping in the Pantanal, Mato Grosso, Brazil. R. Educ. Públ. [online]. 2015, vol.24, n.55, pp.201-221. ISSN 2238-2097.  https://doi.org/10.2015/repub-v25n55jan.abr010.

This article presents the paths taken to create a methodology for participatory social mapping carried out by the Research Group on Environmental Education, Communications and the Arts (GPEA) of the Federal University of Mato Grosso (UFMT). The Social Mapping aims to record identities, territories and socio-environmental conflicts experienced by the social groups living there based on self- denominations and self-narratives. It works as an important dialogical pathway for environmental education by highlighting the intrinsic relationship between culture and nature, reinforcing the understanding that the loss of one implies the disappearance of the other. Interwoven with the methodological path taken, the results present the mapping of social groups carried out in Mato Grosso's Pantanal, in addition to an example of social mapping by a Pantanal community.
