Abstract

EARP, Maria de Lourdes Sá  and  PRADO, Ana Pires do. The teacher´s judgment in class councils in schools of the city of Rio de Janeiro. R. Educ. Públ. [online]. 2016, vol.25, n.58, pp.33-53. ISSN 2238-2097.  https://doi.org/10.2016/repub-v25n58jan.abr003.

In every school, there are the Class Council meetings, collective rituals in which teachers assess, judge and categorize their students. This article aims to describe how do the Class Councils work and how do teachers judge the students. We use the participant observation in Class Councils in three public schools in Rio de Janeiro city: two elementary schools and one high school. Our description and ethno graphic analysis reveals that the judgments are more moral and, thus more social than academic. From the viewpoint of the teachers, the student failure is the just academic mode of excluding undesirable students.

Keywords : Ethnography; Class Council; Evaluation; Teacher´s Judgment.
