Abstract

HONORATO, Tony  and  MONARCHA, Carlos. From gateway of the outback to a city of learning: the institutionalization of education in Piracicaba during the 19th century. R. Educ. Públ. [online]. 2016, vol.25, n.58, pp.175-198. ISSN 2238-2097.  https://doi.org/10.2016/repub-v25n58jan.abr010.

In the 1800s there was an expansion of the agricultural frontiers, roads, railways and urban development in western Sao Paulo toward Mato Grosso, leading to the organization of settlements, parishes, villages and cities. In the case of Piracicaba in the Province of Sao Paulo, initiatives to promote education came to be fundamental. Thus, the proposition is to present and interpret the process of the institutionalization of education in Piracicaba during the 19th century. From printed sources, the results indicate a process which moved from the former schoolmasters to proper official schools of the State and which underwent political tensions between conservatives and liberals, monarchists and republicans.
