Abstract

This article examines scenarios, dilemmas and perspectives experienced in the recent history of Distance Education (DE). We have established four periods for analysis: pre-1996 (fertilization and gestation mode), 1996-2005 (birth and pedagogical and legal definitions), 2006-2015 (maturing and practical experience in public institutions); and post-2015 (legal and pedagogical setbacks, resulting from the political and financial crisis experienced lately by Brazil). In the analysis, we consider the legislation and the literature on distance education and the modus operandi of institutional experiences. Thus, the text presents arguments and reflections, seeking a systemic vision of distance education and indicating the parts that make a whole.
