The article focuses the history of primary education of the city of Rio de Janeiro in the 1920s and dedicates mainly to the possible relations that were established between urban localities and the western region, with special attention to the rural district of Guaratiba. Thus, starting with the research in the press, educational printings and remodeling projects of the architectural design, this study problematizes the various understandings of urban and rural that were built by the Instruction Directory due to the relations between city times and spaces with school times and spacesin the period.
