This paper discusses the role of public schools in contemporary, analyzing official documents that legislate about different policies and pro grams; and semi-structured interviews with teachers and principals in public schools the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre. Among the results, declare that currently visualize a movement of extension of those functions as signed to schools. That moviment has produced a reconfiguration of what has been understood until now as school knowledge. Understand that these two processes - the extension of scho ol functions and a contemporary redefinition of school knowledge - are interwoven into a larger movement that some authors have called the social educationalization.
