To investigate representations of a student’s duty that collaborate to legitimize a meritocratic ideal at school were mobilized two sets: a) answers pro vided by retired teachers that have worked in the elementary schools of Santa Catarina between the years of 1940 and 1970 and b) documents that gathered records of school’s daily routine. The the oric support for the main discussion comes from works by Pierre Bourdieu, Denice Catani and Ione Ribeiro Valle. We opted to highlight artefacts that materialize school’s expedients, because they educates, due to the lack of or by the prescriptions that determine how they should be used and thus provide tips of how they could serve for teaching.
