The article aims to bring to the fore the presence of african brazilian1 women workers enrolled in periodicals from the state of Mato Grosso, in the city of Cuiabá-MT, at the end of the 19th century. On the accomplishment of this work, the cross-referencing between the information contained in the periodicals and the Census of 1890, as well as the bibliographic research, was used as methodology. It is considered that Afri can Brazilian women were present in the world of free work and diverse spaces in the literate universe in the capital of the Province.
