Abstract

FREITAS, Mayanne Julia Tomaz; FELIX, Jeane  and  CARVALHO. Can men be feminist? Pioneer masculinity studies in Northeaster Brazil. R. Educ. Públ. [online]. 2018, vol.27, n.66, pp.861-881.  Epub May 07, 2019. ISSN 2238-2097.  https://doi.org/10.29286/rep.v27i66.7013.

Based on bibliographical and empirical research, this text explores the trajectories of feminist men and their identification with gender studies and the feminist movement. Towards this aim, it points out the emergence of masculinity studies and the possibility of a male feminist identity. To illustrate the inclusion of men in the feminist movement, interviews were conducted with two founders of two pioneer institutions in masculinity studies: an NGO and a university center. The interviewees envision the feminist movement as a collective political project and confirm the importance of engaging men in the struggle for gender equity.

Keywords : Feminist Identity; Feminist Men; Masculinity Studies.
