Abstract

The aim of the research was to investigate the causes of difficulties in understanding the mathematical language presented in the classroom activities. He used the qualitative approach and the interpretative method, having as instruments: participatory observation, semi-structured interview, field diary and student material. The analysis was guided by the interpretive method. The subjects were 9th grade students and their mathematics teachers. The results indicated that: the students investigated presented difficulties in understanding what they read. In this sense, the research contributes to discussions related to the difficulties of understanding the mathematical language and its relation with mathematical learning.
