The present study aimed to identify the social representations of professional choice developed by middle school students from public schools. This research employs a qualitative and quantitative approach, with data collected through a questionnaire and interview, in a sample composed of 471 middle school students. Quantitative data were tabulated using the Sphinx© software. The content of interviews, after transcription, was analyzed with the Alceste© software. The results reveal that the young people surveyed build representations related to professions coming from higher education, which would allow social and economic ascension, besides being able to act in the improvement of the community.
