Abstract

BREDER, Debora  and  SANTOS, Marta Castro dos. Wahuiru Pakup: the meanings of school. R. Educ. Públ. [online]. 2022, vol.31, e11279.  Epub Apr 30, 2022. ISSN 2238-2097.  https://doi.org/10.29286/rep.v31ijan/dez.11279.

This article presents a excerpt from a research which objective was to analyze the meanings of school for the indigenous society Sateré Mawé. Ethnographic in character, the research sought to undertake a “thick description” of the social and symbolic relations observed at the Wahuiru Pakup Indigenous Municipal School (Novo Sol), located in the Andirá-Marau Indigenous Land, Monte Salém Community, Maués/Amazonas. Participant observation in the daily lives of families - from flour to playing in the river with children -, and active listening carried out with the research interlocutors - the teacher, students and their parents – enabled the understanding of the meanings of school for the community.
