Abstract

Basic Education has been tangentially affected by imminent mutations of its public meaning due to the of education privatization programs. Based on documents produced by the International Education Federation Union in twelve Latin American countries, we analyze mercantile processes in Latin American education. Emphasizing on trends and actions taken by private entities in Peru and Panama. The paper identifies two parallel movements of privatization: the increasing participation of the business sector in education feasible by legal mechanisms; and the decreasing role of the State as a provider of public goods through governmental programs based on managerial and market principles.
