Abstract

BASTOS, Glória  and  TOME, Maria da Conceição. Representations of Amazonia in contemporary portuguese children’s literature. LTP [online]. 2013, vol.31, n.60, pp.11-26. ISSN 2317-0972.

Abstract: The study of the representations of the Other in literature for young people becomes an important research field especially taking into account the characteristics of young readers and the socialization and cultural role that literature assumes. Through the contact with the social and cultural images of the Other presented in books, young people become available for an effective dialogue with other cultures, acquiring, through reading, new ways of seeing the world and dialoguing with the Other. This article examines the representations of Amazonia and its inhabitants in Portuguese books for young people. We have identified socio-cultural visions and ideological values transmitted by these images and have reflected on how these portraits contribute (or not) for the (de)construction of stereotypes and prejudices and for the discovery of the Other living overseas
