Abstract

CAVALLARI, Juliana Santana. Reading as an event: meanings which emerge from student’s English books. LTP [online]. 2013, vol.31, n.60, pp.137-150. ISSN 2317-0972.

Abstract This study aims to uncover some discourses and voices which attribute meanings and effects of truth to the materiality stated in Student’s English books, specially the imported ones widely used in our country. In order to do so - based on the discursive- deconstructive perspective - the presence of the pillar ideology that founded the North American civilization was searched so that, afterwards, we could observe and understand how this ideology appears and is reinforced in the analyzed materials. It was necessary, though, to address some concepts that permeate language teaching and learning process, such as: culture, acculturation, ethnocentrism, and ideology. The analysis presented emphasizes the inseparable relation among language, culture and ideology that acts in the construction of the meanings, raising ethnocentric positioning as well as acculturated ones which might interfere negatively in the English language learning process. It has been pointed out, through the analyzed material, that the way we see and represent the culture of others has an effect in the learner’s subjective constitution.

Keywords : Student’s English Books; Interpretation Gestures; Subjectivity; Discursive- Deconstructive Perspective.
