Abstract In the article my aim is to present results from the research which is being developed under my supervision, focusing on the issue of writing in Mathematics classes in basic education. The work is based on the discussions related to the current need of inserting new methodological perspectives in the classroom, with an emphasis on literacy practice, here seen as social practices based on writing genres. The importance of writing for building up mathematical thought is also discussed. The article is concluded with some texts produced by teachers who teach Mathematics, followed by the strengths we have seen in them.
