Abstract

MACHADO, Terezinha Maher. Definições de infância na Amazônia ocidental indígena: a perspectiva local e o etnocentrismoDefinitions of infancy in indigenous occidental Amazonia: the local perspective and ethnocentrism. LTP [online]. 2013, vol.31, n.61, pp.237-254. ISSN 2317-0972.

The aim of this paper is to examine discursive representations of a group of indigenous teachers who are presently conducting sociolinguistic research projects in their villages in order to produce knowledge that will help them devise linguistic policies capable of strengthening their heritage languages. The analysis will focus, among other issues, on some conflicting views these teachers-researchers and their teacher educators have on how the category “infancy” should be defined, as this is one of the categories used in their data- collecting instruments. Besides arguing that disregarding such different perspectives may result in serious constraints in their professional education as teachers-researchers, it is also claimed that references to local - as a category - should always be interpreted carefully, and that the concept of ethcentrism is not always sufficient to explain all conflicts embedded in intercultural relations
