Abstract: The article aims to discuss the concept of tragedy in the book by Hernâni Donato, Selva trágica. First, by developing an analysis of the concept, through a historicalphilosophical approach, and then observing how its meaning changes in the novel. The meaning that the concept aggregates or displaces in Donato’s novel, in its historical-philosophical context, is an important aspect to be considered when understanding of the general structure of the book, for it permeates the spaces from the beginning, even the title.
