Abstract

COUTO, Regina Célia  and  VIEIRA, Jarbas Santos. In the interstices of national and cultural identity: positions of the teachers in the Brazilian-Uruguayan border. LTP [online]. 2014, vol.32, n.63, pp.29-44. ISSN 2317-0972.  https://doi.org/10.2014/LTP-v32n63dez0003.

Motivated by the constant national and cultural identity marking the border between Brazil and Uruguay, we have problematized the discourses of teachers who worked in the Bilingual Border School Project between Jaguarão/Brazil and Rio Branco/Uruguay. What do Brazilian and Uruguayan identities mean in a context of borders? We have worked with the dispersion of discourses and investigated the following topics: cultural, national, and ambivalent identity. In the borders, the teachers are confronted and move between symbolic and cultural affiliations. The position they occupy in the discourses produces effects, it feeds itself, it shapes the identities while it is formed by them. We have seen that these discourses reinforce the cultural difference. The national and cultural difference is a problem, as in the case of language, which is summarized in identity. In this space, there is a discursive struggle between identities, but it slips into pure border ambivalence.

Keywords : Discourse; Identity; Ambivalence.
