FERREIRA, Norma Sandra de Almeida  e  MAZIERO, Maria das Dores Soares. “Then, let no one suppose that I ignore the author’s name”: João Köpke, the translator. LTP [online]. 2017, vol.35, n.71, pp.73-99. ISSN 2317-0972.  https://doi.org/10.5965/0102-387Xv35n71201700099.

In this text we present a ability of João Köpke (1852-1926) that is little explored by researchers of history and literature: as a translator. We present part of a set of documents, yet to be analyzed as a whole, as the research object and source: 1) Three newspaper publications (1874, 1882) on A morgadinha de Lion (1874), translation of Lady of Lions, by Edward Bulwer-Lytton; 2) Tragédia de uma noiva (1875a), translation of A bride’s tragedy, by Dinah Maria Mulock Craik; As receitas do Dr. Marigold (1875b), translation of Doctor Marigold’s prescriptions, by Charles Dickens; 3) Typed manuscript Conto de amor: Evangelina (s.d.), translation of Evangeline, a tale of Acadie, by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow; 4) publications in newpapers: O corvo (1916, 1917), translation of The Raven, by Edgar Allan Poe. We tried, through this exploratory research, based on the studies of Cultural History, to approach aspects related to the translation practice of João Köpke in order to investigate his motivations and purposes for such practice.
