The Committee for Ethics in Research on Human Beings of the Federal University of Santa Maria - CEP/UFSM - will complete 25 years of operation in 2022. During this period, it is possible to identify the increased relevance of the topic of ethics in research with human beings at UFSM, as well as the growth of the CEP/Conep System. In this text, a bibliographical, documental and descriptive study is presented, which aims to present a history of the structure and operation of the CEP/UFSM, with emphasis on a set of actions that were developed over this time. It is highlighted, in these two decades of operation of the Committee, the promotion of training actions, which involved training and promotion of events, the publication of studies and the collaborative work of people, who mobilized, studied and worked to make the agenda related to ethics in research with human beings at the Federal University of Santa Maria.
