This study is focused on the analysis of a teaching manual widely used by teachers of the Normal Secondary School Amaral Fontoura, the first school for training primary school teachers in Maringá, PR. The manual is entitled the Foundations of Education: a general introduction to the Renewed Education and Living School written by Amaral Fontoura with a special conception of education, which should guide the teacher training and the training of primary school pupils. The various manuals written by this author became subsidiaries of required readings recommended for students of such school, therefore, influenced considerably the normal education in Maringá. Through the analysis of this teaching manual, we seek to understand the reading type available for Normal School students at that time as well as the content developed by teacher educators.
