Abstract

SILVA, Francisco de Assis da Costa  and  ESCOFET, Anna. Free software in compulsory education in Catalonia. A case study. Sér.-Estud. [online]. 2015, n.40, pp.57-78. ISSN 2318-1982.  https://doi.org/10.20435/2318-1982-2015-v.40(04).

This article presents a case study on the use of free software in compulsory education in Catalonia. Is an innovative educational experience in Catalonia, taking in account that few centers implemented the exclusive use, or almost, of free software. Two urban state schools have been chosen, one primary and the other secondary that use almost only this software. Research has tried to learn from the experiences of managers, faculty and students, following the introduction of this type of software in this environment and capture their views and perceptions in this process. Also, to clarify the specific factors that can lead to a better understanding of the changes, advantages and disadvantages of migration. The instruments used to collect the data have been the interview and the direct and not participant observation. The results show that its use in the studied schools is a sustained and relentless reality. Its use is possible and viable, because it responds to the needs and requirements demanded by the centers. Advances are occurring, but are slow.
