Abstract

PEIXOTO, Joana  and  NASCIMENTO, Neuvani Ana do. Digital media and child development: beyond labels and explanations. Sér.-Estud. [online]. 2015, n.40, pp.119-138. ISSN 2318-1982.  https://doi.org/10.20435/2318-1982-2015-v.40(07).

This article presents the theoretical studies that supported a master's research on ways to use of digital media by children aged 4 to 5 years old. It contextualizes the object of research in the broad debate on the relationships among children and digital media, placing the researched subject in various theoretical perspectives, to thereby understand it within a historical and cultural perspec- tive. We introduce some discussions and positions that have infl uenced the ways of looking at and understanding the contemporary childhood and their relationship with the media, from studies of Postman (1999), Buckingham (2007), Tapscott (1999), Veem and Vrakking (2009), Prensky (2010), articulating the knowledge produced by them with the sociological analysis of the uses and appropria tions undertaken by Cardon (2005), Belloni (2010) and Peixoto (2012).

Keywords : Technology and Education; Children and Digital Media; Sociology of Uses and Appropriations.
