Abstract

CABALLERO-GARCIA, Presentación Ángeles  and  GARCIA-SALGUERO, Berta Inés. Social education: access profile, motivational aspects and choice determinants of this career. A case study. Sér.-Estud. [online]. 2018, vol.23, n.48, pp.05-34. ISSN 2318-1982.  https://doi.org/10.20435/serie-estudos.v23i48.1152.

We used a non-experimental, exploratory, descriptive and cross-sectional methodology, based on survey procedure, to analyze the endogenous and exogenous factors that influenced the decision-making process of the students who chose Social Education studies in our university. The sample was composed by 128 students in total, selected incidentally and not randomly, who agreed to participate voluntarily in our study. The questionnaire, designed ad hoc for the objectives of the study, proved to have adequate indexes of validity and reliability. The data obtained have shown that the choice of this professional career is mainly female and their expectation of professional development is influenced by gender stereotypes. The surveyed students value as a determining element of this option of studies, the social aspects of their work functions, their cultural contribution and what they perceive as a possibility of reconciliation with their family life. The results of the current research are discussed in terms of equal opportunities in access to studies and subsequent socio-employment.

Keywords : Social Education; professional choice; gender differences; educational guidance; equal opportunities.
