Abstract

BENATTI, Vania Pereira Morassutti  and  AGUIAR, Marcio Mucedula. Diagnosis of university evasion in the initial series of the undergraduate courses of UEMS in 2014: A comparison study between the quotas and wide competition. Sér.-Estud. [online]. 2018, vol.23, n.48, pp.195-217. ISSN 2318-1982.  https://doi.org/10.20435/serie-estudos.v23i48.1100.

The objective of this work was to survey the annual evasion rate of black students admitted through the quota system in the first term of undergraduate programs from Universidade Estadual de Mato Grosso do Sul (UEMS), Campus Dourados, in 2014. UEMS'annual evasion rate in the analyzed period corresponds to 35.8% in general vacancies, which covers the total number of vacancies offered (wide competition, indigenous, black). By way of admission, annual evasion was around 36.5% in the wide competition category, 27% in the quota system for the indigenous population and 33.8% in the vacancies reserved for black people. To better understand the causes of dropout, a quantitative analysis was combined with interviews with six black students who dropped out of their courses. These interviews highlighted as factors of evasion: socioeconomic difficulties, distance between home and university, lack of affinity with the chosen course, as well as lack of reception by the institution. The very small difference in the number of students who are entering the competition by admission to the quota system shows that evasion is a broad problem, not specific to entrants by the quota system, recognizing the importance of affirmative action for access and diversification ethnic-racial higher education in Brazil.

Keywords : affirmative actions; quotas; university evasion.
